Getting a job in education can be life-changing. Whether you want to work in a nursery, school, or college, there are roles for every skill set. Here's a simple guide to help you get started in 2025.

Get a job in education - SOAR Recruitment

1. Choose Your Path

Start by deciding where you’d like to work:

  • Early years (nurseries, preschools)

  • Primary or secondary schools

  • SEN schools

  • Higher education

  • Children’s homes

  • Private nanny or tutoring roles

Each setting needs different qualifications and offers different experiences.

2. Get Qualified

Make sure you have the right qualifications:

  • For nurseries: Level 2 or 3 in Childcare

  • For teaching assistants: CACHE Level 2/3 or equivalent

  • For teachers: QTS or PGCE

  • For SEN roles: SENCO training or experience with additional needs

If you're unsure, speak to a recruitment agency that specialises in education, like SOAR.

3. Build Experience

Volunteering or part-time work helps. Even one day a week in a school or nursery can make a big difference on your CV. Gaining temporary positions could be a great way to build your experience - AND you don't always need a qualification.

4. Prepare Your CV

Highlight your qualifications, experience, and passion for working with children or young people. Keep it short, clear, and tailored to the job you want.

5. Apply Smart

Search job boards like Education Careers, contact agencies, and sign up for alerts. Make sure your application matches the job description.

6. Get Interview Ready

Common questions include:

  • Why do you want to work here?

  • What experience do you have with children?

  • How do you handle difficult behaviour?

Be honest and keep answers focused.

7. Stay Updated

Safeguarding, SEN practices, and curriculum plans often change. Doing a short CPD course every few months can help you stay ahead.
